Me3 Foundations – Alpha Group Day 9

Sunday, July 07, 2013
Day 9
The weather forecasted that today was going to rain; and it did. So in the morning we had a special PT which consisted of the usual stretches, then a relay race with push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and jumping jacks, and finally ending with an ultimate Frisbee game between the groups (by Philip). After breakfast our visiting instructor taught us about knots for the rest of the morning. There were many kinds of knots to be learned, with challenge tests in the end to see which group remembers the most knots. The winning team (Charlie) gets a ‘get out of cleaning’ card, while the losing team (Bravo) has to take their place in the cleaning duty. Lunch consisted of spicy steak and spaghetti. The reason for the spicy steak was to get the students to drink more water and stay hydrated. After lunch, Bravo group and Charlie group went out with Billy and Philip on the Zodiac to do more Man-Overboard drills, while Alpha group and Delta group went kayaking with Allan and Michael. The ones who stayed behind got to help clean up the camp. When it was all done and over, we had to say goodbye to Philip, who is going back home. Many students got second servings during dinner. We had another campfire tonight, with more drama plays and an interesting game of mimicking someone from the camp. There will be more water activities tomorrow and more drama plays around the campfire. Stay tune!
P.S. Lastly… yesterday’s votes for promotion are in! We would like to congratulate Nina and Kaysha on their outstanding performances and promotion to the (Yellow Shirt) Junior Leadership!! Congratulations!

Water sports/activities again! Woo hoo! It was also a fantastic day today. Not only did we do water activities, we also had a tieing knots lesson from Billy’s friend Philip. We learnt how to the 9 or 10 different types of knots. Afterwards, Bravo group and Charlie group went on to Billy’s boat to do some  more ‘man overboard’ drills. The water was a bit cold, but was worth it, because the drills we learnt are going to be helpful for our future J

Today is Phillips departure day. He was such a fun guy with sooo many stories to tell. I learned a lot about knots today with him. in addition, we had sooo much fun doing water drill with Charlie today. We learned that communication was the key to today’s activity’s success. Tomorrow Jennifer’s coming! Yeah!

Kelvin
Today I was very cold

Kevin
Didn’t go kayaking and man overboard. The reason was that I injured myself when I was playing basketball. All my fault. But instead I helped the leaderships out in cleaning the stoves, washing the boxes…. But best of all, I get to wet a broom and knock out all (well, most) the mosquitos inside the tent with Edwin Cheung (junior leadership). Extremely fun.

Ingrid Zhou
I am waiting for take a shower. I just come back for from lake. Today I swam in lake. Actually is similar to swim in swimming pool. Billy told us that tomorrow we will swim 1km! Now my roommate are talking about their returning flight. They said that they want to go back to China. I want to go back to China too. Although Canada is beautiful and the activity of Monticle is interesting, I miss China. I miss my father and mother. How time flies! Today is Day 9 we can’t stop time. But we can keep good memory and enjoy this moment.

Today, I have discussed about “How to tie a rope with bunny ears” such as an eight string balloon loop and much more. Tieing the rope was very challenging because it was a lot of practice. This afternoon, I approached on the water safety boat with the Bravo team group. At the water before the private bach, I swan at least a kilometer with front crawl and walking along the water. Then, I did the man on board leadership safety skills. I have used my muscles to hold other arm from each other in the deep end water. After that, I headed back to Muskey’s Landing cottage resort by the water safety boat. I had a huge perfect day!!!!

Meagan
We had a weird day, in The morning we had a class with Philip about knots and there was like 10 KNOTS!!!!!
But after lunch, we had much more FUN!!!!
It was still water safety, but we to a open lake and had to swim to a beach (Private beach (accident)), and get some sand and give it to Billy. Today was A LOT OF FUN, wish tomorrow is  better.

Today we had a long and entertaining PT courtesy of Philip, the temporary instructor. We did suicides and played ultimate Frisbee. At dinner we were attacked by seagulls. After dinner Ethan put on an amusing show featuring his best Lemuel impression and the Chinese anthem. Overall, today was a funny day.

Edwin Chung
Today, I help out of Calvin throught the day. I stay on base for sometime and work with Calvin the Clear and get ready for dinner. I hope that I can get on water sometime. Mom thank for the optinities you gave me and I miss you and Love you. My decidion is to me is to continue high school for a better life.

Today I woke up at 5:00! I just couldn’t fall asleep! SO I just waited and waited until it was 6:00, and the next thing I knew it was time for PT. PT was extremely long today because Phillip had us do drills then we played Ultimate Frisbee. After a tiring PT, we had breakfast and then Philip taught us about knots. After the lesson, we had lunch then changed into the wetsuits and got in the water. In the water, we got in the kayaks and did lots of laps.

Tiffany Ng
A lot happened today, (I KNOW, I SAID THAT A LOT) but flashing back to last year, we went manover board, pre-drilling. As I was relatively farmilliar with that training, I was asked to join and tag along. Given the difficulties of leading Man-over board in water, we did a pre-course on land. Inside the water, a few boat circling drills proceeded. I was surprisingly a supervisor! On the trip back I was asking to drive the boat. Sigh so tired. Peace. I’m out!

Elvin
Being a leadership is not a callsign, nor a position. Instead, it is an action. Today our instructor Billy told me some moral about leadership in action, one of the things he mentioned was hope. If I give hope to people and successfully persuade them, they may become my followers or listen to me. I learnt how to kayak today, but Billy used it as a non-direct action to train our leadership, alternatively. Learning kayaking wasn’t the main point, it was the team-coordination and conductivity that we built together while we were kayaking that made us united. I think our instructor is a great person, sometimes he restrains me from calling him “sir” but I still pay my respect however I can.

Eric Lo
I ate the most expensive lunch today- beef + pepper. Also, I have learnt how to play ultimate Frisbee- which you need to pass to Frisbee to the opponent’s end zone. Also, the boat ride was very fun.

Fred
Today is very fun. We did all of the very very very fun dirlls we swam in the lake.

Imaan Hirji
Today was a really fun day. It started out kind of slow but progressively got better. We started out with PT, but instead of regular PT we played capture the flag as well. The we had breakfast. After breakfast we learned about all kinds of knots. We learned about figure eights, reef knots, and all kinds of hitches. Then we had lunch. After lunch we got on the speed boat that took us to the middle of the lake. We swam around the boat in groups of three. Then we swam about 1km to the beach were we had to grab a bunch of sand and bring it back to the boat. Then we went back to camp and had dinner. After dinner we had a campfire and now were going to bed.

Pompey Leung
What a tired day gain!! PT time we played ultimate frizbee it something like American Football; but using a “plate” to play it. That really funny. After that I have a whole day kayak, That’s tired!

Sabrina Mak
Today everything is all about water safety. In the morning, Phillip had taught us different ways of how to tie a knot. Some knots look had, but are easy to do, where as some look easy but are difficult to do. After lunch, we got dressed into our wetsuits and started the exhausting training. We had to face our back in the water, and use our feet to kick most of us counterclockwise or clockwise. It was hard, but it made me gained more confidence in myself.
I have more learnt about water safety and also how dangerous water could be. Tomorrow, I can’t wait to do more kayaking!

Nina Tan
Today, I woke up at 6:35AM. At 7:15AM we started physical training, today we did extra training, we did our normal routine, we did a team challenge and then we played ultimate frisbee. After, we ate breakfast and then we had a room inspection. Then, we learned how to tie knots in several ways. It was fun! After the lesson, we ate lunch and then we prepared for our lesson in water. After our lesson, we ate supper and then we all sat around the campfire.

Siena Difelice
Today we went in the water for about 3 hours today it was so much fun. Before we went in water for 3 hours we learned how to tie so many not’s the bowline not was the hardest. The lesson was tought the awes-ome Philip. Then we played a game to see if we remembred coch not be taught the prize was to get a card where you didn’t and guess who who it was us because we so pre no because everyone had really good memorie. That was my day in the water and tieing nots!

Chin Ho
We had a full day of water activities, one word can cover it all, AWESOME!!!! We learnt how to kayak and do all the basic skills. At the end of the day, my group had an argument about who will take a shower first and last, we argued for at least 20 mins but at the end of the day. Rock paper scizors was the solution.

Mireille
Today during PT we play ultimate Alpha&Charlie vs Bravo&Delta. It was very fun but unfortunately, we only play it during about 30 minutes. After that, Phillip different ways of making knots. In the afternoon Alpha and Delta learn how to go towards backwards and sideward with kayak and I also teach some children how to paddle in the kayak. In dinner we ate spaghetti, tuna and vegetable.

Nathan
Day 9, we kayaked for the whole afternoon.

Lemuel
PT with Phillip was longer then army PT we had throughout the camp. Reason was that we played ultimate Frisbee. After which we had breakfast followed by a lesson on tying knots taught by Phillip. However Pompey and I stopped early into the lesson to scout out the area in the Kayaks. We were unable to find any place where we can stop and headed back for lunch which by the way was steak. This was followed by even more kayaking in the afternoon, leaving me dying of exhaustion.

Tess Chau
Toda it was raining all morning, so didn’t get to go straight into the water after breakfast. But luckily we had Phillips (Billy collegue who came yesterday) to teach us a knot-tying class which was really cool! We learnt how to tie 9 different knots! After lunch, finally we got to go into the water! Today Bravo and Charlie (the teams) got to go on a 4 hour long boat trip on drills while Alpha (my team) and Delta did kayaking skill learning with Alan! I am totally looking forward to Alpha and Delta’s boat trip, especially because Billy said it was going to be extra challenging! J

Julian Ma
Today was a great day, the food was best today and I actually like it most, we had chilli sauce steak with curry spaghetti, but it was just a bit too spicy, I had to take breaks in between bites, the breakfast was good too, I had 3.5 waffle and oatmeal, after, it was a full day kayaking, nothing special, but I figured out a new shortcut to kayak faster, I kayaked through a bunch of grass, it feels like going through the jungle, yeah, good day, also I drank “Canada dry” that’s it for today see yah tomorrow!

Ethan Zhao
Cast off! INto the water…. SPLASH! That’s right people, I got into the water today! But my handicapped arm had to be heavily wrapped in garbage. (bag) I single handedly kayaked with … someone or some people. Also, we learnt how to tie various useful and life saving knots from Philip, who sadley had to go back to work, I wish I could walk with Lemul swag.

Naomi Golin
Today we learned to tie knots as well as kayaking. I learned a different knots that ranged from holding up strings to pieces of wood. My favorite knot is the reeves knot because it is the most powerful and can be used for the most things. During kayaking I learned how to stop and go backwards. I found it fun when we had to go around the area because there were a lot of obsticles to face. All in all, it was a great day.

Rita Chung
Today, we had a full day of watersports again. But, this time, we did kayaking. We learned frontstroke, backstroke and stop. It hurt my arms a lot. But right now I can’t concentrate on writing this blog entry, because I lost my wallet. I feel sad. Sorry, mom!

Nestor
Today I was so tierd because we did two big laps in a kayake paddleing. But I am always last.

  3. My dear Ingrid,

Wow, swimming 1 km in a lake! It's a big challenge. But I'm sure you can make it, because you are such a great swimmer. How time flies! Half of time has passed in your summer camp. I miss you too, and I can't wait to see you and listen to you telling stories of your trip. I know now you are missing home, but just relax and enjoy yourself for the rest days. After you come back to China, maybe you'll miss the time in Canada and your friends and teachers there. I will work in a new film next month. This time, it's a feature film, not a documentary. If you are interested, you can come to Shanghai to visit me and see how to make a film~

    -Love, Dad & Mom
