Today was a day jam-packed with information. We
received packages yesterday concerning two topics relevant to our crossing of
Lake Ontario sometime in the very-near future—Risk management, and water safety
with a focus on hypothermia. We had the opportunity to review all of the notes
as a group, and Billy showed us some of the items which included VHF radios, GPS,
and flare guns. Then, we took the tests.
We took a break for a lunch of fresh bread,
sweet corn, and chicken. After lunch, we received our test results—those that
did not get full marks had to take a retest. We did another review with all of
the students before the retests; in the end, everyone passed and we are all
able to go on the water tomorrow for the next test to see if we are qualified
for the Lake Ontario crossing.
Then, we went for a hike on the Oak Ridges
Trail which took both Alpha and Bravo approximately 2 hours. We were told to
observe man’s effect on nature, to identify animas that we encountered, and to
collect some plant specimens (safely, of course). Alpha group was also able to
find an improvised bow that someone had left in the forest—and were also able
to successfully shoot an arrow-like stick.
All in all, we all enjoyed today, and we will
be sure to enjoy tomorrow’s activities as well! We will definitely need to rest
up for tomorrow’s qualification test! Stay tuned!

Giving too much detail on a challenge
question cost me a night in HQ that was painful—literally. I won’t say anything
though. So let’s get to today. Our morning lectures were on risk management for
water sports and water safety through hypothermia. As usual, there were
multiple choice tests that had to be done perfectly or we imply had to redo
them.
The
fun came after lunch, when we went out o a hiking trip on the Oak Ridges Trail.
My Alpha group began the trek fine, but we somehow wandered off trail and went
on a dirt path beside the lake where we found an Improvised BOW! What a
surprise! One wild walk through tall grasses and bushes brought us to our
target, having intaken some very convenient details on human-nature
interaction.
Now,
almost halfway through the 19-day summer program, I’m beginning to mature and
learning to do things independently. Hopefully I will take these skills home in
just a week and a half’s time, and by that time I will have witnessed great
achievements of those here at Monticle and realize that when I believe, I can
achieve.

Today we went to hiking n a trail called the
oak ridges trail. We started the day with a breakfast of cinamon toast crunch
and waffles. After that we had to prepare with a water safety course about risk
and hypothermia. It took me two tries to accomplish the risk management and
hypothermia. After that we set off to go to the trail. During the trail I Was
told to lead the group which gave me a chance to prove myself after my failed
navigation atempt. During the walk I got others to nav giving them all a chance
to show me their worth. When we reached a fork in the road, we all knew the
right path but decided to go the other way for the adventure. We then got their
fine in the end and we also aquired a bow.

Today is day 9 or so of the Charlie rotation.
We had two tests this morning after e woke up at 7:00 am and cleaned. The two
tests were on Risk management and water safety an hypothermia. To pass those
two tests you needed to get perfect on them. They were both relatively easy...
actually they were very easy as the questions were straight from the text and
the answers avalible were obvious. After the tests we packed our gear for a 2
hour hike which was actually fairly fun and entertaining. During the hike we
were to look for plant samples and observe how humans had affected the natural
environment. After te hike we came back to HQ to eat dinner and write our
blogs.

We woke up late today and didn’t have time to
study for our test on water safety. We sweeped up the building and set the
tables and chairs. While we waited for Kenny, we tested each other on
hypothermia. When Kenny arrived, we had breakfast which was cornflakes and
milk. After that we had a lecture on water safety and we had our tests. Once we
finished our tests, we went on a hiking trip on the Oakland Trails. We were to
pick up plants and identify animals along the way. I was the plant collector
and found a lot of flowers and leaves along the way. Roman and Jordan navigated
us and Jennifer took photos of the animals. At the end, we presented where we
went and what we found. Alpha group took a different group so we wasted a lot
of time trying to locate each other.

Today I spent most of my time with Billy and
not with the students. I have very little detail as to what the students did
today asides from hiking and learning about water risk management. I helped
Billy with some personal jobs and bought food for the next few days. Near the
end of the day Billy had a group discussion with all the seniors about the next
day.

Today was an interesting day. We started off
doing 2 classes about water safety and hypothermia. We then did 2 different
exams. I passed both on the first try, but some students needed assistance. We
then left for a hike. Half way during the hike we decided to take the senic
route. We went a different path but made it before the other group. We went
through mud, grass and weed. When we finished the seniors got briefed about
tomorrow’s plan. We the seniors are ready for the next day.

In the morning, we spent a couple hours
learning about water safety and water sports. It was required that we knew all
the information presented in order to go across lake Ontario on a kayak. After
the lessons, we had two lots to go through which were very easy. After we were
finished with the tests, we went on an urban hike which was actually a lot of
fun. We ended up getting lost in the forest but as we went on, we found a bow!
Eventually we got out of the forest and onto the streets, towards our meet-up
point. Today was actually a pretty good day even though we had to do class work
for half the day.

We woke up at 6:30 this morning. I packed up
the stuff I brought to the apartment. We cleaned the apartment and went back to
HQ. For breakfast we had cereal, and waffles. After breakfast we all except
Calvin had a class about hypothermia and water safety including tests on both.
Everyone passed the test After lunch. For lunch we had bbq chicken, corn and
bread. After lunch we went or a hike through a park trail called OAK Ridges. We
went the correct way but we were behind Alpha team. Alpha team went the wrong
way after Yonge Street. On the way we say Raymond, Kenny and Kannis ad walked
with them to the destination. By the time we got there Alpha team was there. We
had to talk about the flowers and the observation of the park. On the way back
to HQ we went to some community place for a washroom break.
P.S.
Mom I’m wearing my new shoes!
Roman
We were supose to have a CPR class today, or
at least that was the plan. We migth do the class after dinner. We went on a
hike after lunch. The hike was around one and a half hours, which is around 5
km. Tomorrow we will swim and most likely “die”. Camp is awseum!!!!!!!
Jennifer
I am under some very tight time constraints at
the moment—work under pressure~ Billy needs the blogs to be uploaded pronto so
that we can get to the apartment and sleep ASAP because whoo-whee, we have a
long day tomorrow. Agh. I need to speed things up. So a few things I learned
today are: everyone’s idiosyncrasies add to this lovely swirl of a group dynamic,
but sometimes it just becomes a toxic soup and plethora of problems—in short, a
real mess; Raymond’s choice of music on the car, however monotone and rarely fluctuating
from its tone-deafness, is actually very inspirational to me. We were so-called
“tortured” by it in the car yesterday, and I did sling a few comments at the
lack of intonation and the weirdness of the lyrics. However, Raymond then told
us that it the singer was a taxi driver in Hong Kong who loved to sing; this
man sold his five taxis just to be able to produce these beautifully awful
tracks.
I AM PREPARED FOR TOMORROW! Booyah.
Andrew
Today was a very exciting and knowledgable
day. The first thing we did was learn. about hydothermia and risk management in
the water. After being evaluated on what we learned. Also, I was given the
honor to use one of Billy’s professional cameras to take pictures of everyone’s
objective. Take a hike at conservational park. I will now await on Billy’s critique
of the photos that I took today.

We had a boring morning today. We had to
review 2 packages and then tested on it. I got perfect on both on the first try
and ended up waiting for others to get perfect. Next we went hiking for the
afternoon. We went to Bathurst, around Bond Lake. My group went a “detour,” and
managed to find a makeshift bow and arrow. The trip was totally worth it since
we beat the other group.
Jordan
Today, the program began with lectures about
risk management and water safety: Hypothermia. We were given notes the previous
night in order to study for the test given. Risk management included the
purpose, types of illnesses possible such as hypothermia, vertigo and coldshock
and how to treat them. We were put to the test later where everyone passed
easily. In the afternoon, we went to Oak Ridges Trail in Richmond Hill. This
was a 5 km trail which crossed Younge street. The trail was pretty straight
forward however there were split paths at times. We had to collect plants and
observe animals in the area. When we returned we had to analyze the samples abd
discuss them. Overall, I gained a lot of knowledge today about kayaking, the
environment, and how we affect them.
Matthew
Today was class day. VERY BORING! It was about
the safety measures for crossing of Lake Toronto. We took two test. One for
Risk Management and another for water sport safety. Then we went to a trail in
Elgin Mills. It was called Oakridges Trail. Our group, Alpha went off the
trail. We went and another way and surprisingly came back to the end of the
trail and beat the other team, Bravo. Tomorrow we are water training at Cherry
beach, centre island, swimming 1.5 km too.
Jonathan
Today, we had a Presentation about Hypothesia and water safety o prepare us for the exam. I failed on the first try, but Passed on the second try. There were twenty questions on the two topics. After lunch, we were supposed to meet Billy in downtown Toronto, but the traffic was horrible there, So we instead drove to a golf course in Richmond Hill where we were given a report about the Oak Ridges Trail. It was good and very tiring. After the walking in the trail, we drove over to the Oak Ridges Community Centre. I was glad to be back in Richmond Hill because it is way better and very fun! Tomorrow we are in the water for the day. I learned how to find the correct trail that we were walking on.
